Plastic Bottles

Plastic Bottles

35 mm film canisters are good for some things but sometimes you need a good solid screw-on cap. Enter the Nalgene wide mouth bottles. Left to right, the picture shows the 1/2 ounce (with drop dispenser cap), 1 ounce and 2 ounce bottle. The 1 ounce bottle weighs 1/4 ounce.

Ordering Information

Iodine Tablets Iodine Tablets
  • 1 ounce
  • Kills everything except cryptosporidia cysts
  • 50 tablets

Iodine is great because it's simple. Two tablets added to a quart gives you water free of everything except cryptosporidia. This glass bottle of 50 tablets weighs 1 ounce. Transfer them to a plastic bottle (1 ounce size), and the weight is cut in half. Don't forget to add bits of vitamin C tablet to get rid of any strange iodine taste.

Aquamira Aquamira
  • 3 ounces
  • Kills everything
  • No aftertaste
  • 2% aqueous solution of chlorine dioxide

Add 7 drops from the "A" bottle and 7 drops from the "B" bottle into a cap. Let it sit 5 minutes, then add to a quart of water. Sure, it's more complicated than iodine but it kills bacteria, viruses, protozoans – everything except you! That includes cryptosporidia. The kit weighs 3 ounces and is good for 30 gallons. The chlorine dioxide mixture leaves no odor or aftertaste. It does its magic by unleashing oxygen radicals onto the bug's DNA.

Fuel Tablets

Fuel Tablets

Can't find fuel tablets? I've got them in stock. A safe, clean burning fuel, easy to ignite, smokeless, odorless and non-toxic. Twenty-four 1/4 ounce tablets per box. Rule of thumb – three tablets per one-pot meal. This brand is less expensive than Esbit Tablets and easier to cook with.

Ordering Information

Gaiters Gaiters
  • 3.8 ounces
  • Breathable nylon
  • Low cut

These are probably the lightest gaiters in the world. At 3.8 ounces for the pair, you won't even know you're wearing them. Made of breathable nylon, they're a pleasure to wear in hot weather. They keep your socks clean and the dirt out of your shoes. They feature a front Velcro® closure, a hook to attach to your shoe laces and an elastic top. A grommet/lace combination loops under your sole to keep the gaiter from rising and slipping over the shoe top.

Tip:  Dispense with the lace system entirely. Here's how:
Sew a nickel-sized piece of Velcro® on the inside of the gaiter near the bottom edge that's riding over the heel of your shoe. Super glue the opposing piece of Velcro® to the outside of your shoe on the heel-end. When you put your gaiter on, the two Velcro® pieces should align and hook together. Then you won't have to hassle with a lace system that tends to cake up with dirt or wear out and break.

Towel
Towel
  • 1/2 ounce
  • Super-absorbent
  • 12"x24"
  • Fast-drying

This amazing towel only weighs 1/2 ounce. It comes in a tiny packet but expands into a 12" by 24" cloth. It is super-absorbent. It has many uses–pot holder, towel, washcloth, bandana, bandage. I personally like my towels with a slightly rough texture–better to scrub the dirt with–and this one fits the bill.
