PIRATES OF
THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL
With the ever-growing
popularity of the Appalachian Trail, pirates smell money and want to
cash in on the action. eBay has already shut down two crooked
businessmen who were illegally duplicating my videos and selling them as
a so-called "vendor." In both cases I would not have known about these
thieves had not some kind-hearted people tipped me off.
The fact is that my main
source of income comes from the handful of videos I've produced and
marketed since 1987. With the advent of the DVD format, I am especially
at the mercy of unscrupulous thieves who could, knowingly or otherwise,
cause my one-man business enterprise to go under.
I appeal to those of you
who love the wilderness to please report such illegal video and DVD
pirating operations.
There are three easy ways
to spot a pirate:
- All of my videos and
DVDs will have my signature on the label or disc. My handwritten
signature is never twice the same, since it's done "live," not by a
machine.
- All of my videos and
DVDs will have a color cover. In addition, the DVD covers will have
another backpacking video title on its reverse side (done to save
money in the printing process).
- Besides my own Web
site, the only authorized re-sellers for my videos and DVDs are the
Appalachian Trail Conservancy, Pacific Crest Trail Association,
Continental Divide Trail Alliance, Continental Divide Trail Society,
Campmore, REI, Amazon.com, AVCafe, Instructional Video, Chessler
Books and Bill Irwin Associates. Anyone else attempting to sell my
videos should be reported immediately.
If you spot a pirate,
please email me or send the questionable copies to me so I can verify
its false nature and then take appropriate action.
I'll send you a legal copy
as well as a further reward for your troubles.
Here's hoping I can continue to make backpacking videos for another 20
years. With your help I will! |
